Kurt and Teresa have lived their lives in rural Iowa, meeting while attending Iowa State University. After college they returned to Teresa’s hometown of approximately 300 people, where Kurt served as a veterinarian and Teresa worked in social services with Department of Corrections, hospitals and schools. Kurt and Teresa were also involved with a church plant in their rural area, where Kurt gave regular messages during Sunday services.
Kurt began serving on medical mission teams with vet services to Nicaragua farmers in 2002, and Teresa followed in 2007 with their children, Andrew, Sarah and Joshua, serving in pharmacy, family packs and children’s church. After their youngest child graduated from high school, they sensed God’s calling to partner with Him and their Nicaragua brothers and sisters in Nicaragua.
Kurt is serving as field director, while Teresa is assisting Nicaraguan staff with the needs at the Home of Protection. They have often been asked why they chose to move to another country when their homeland has such great spiritual needs. Hoping to encourage others to consider how God is using them to further His kingdom, their response is, “He did not call us to serve in our country. Perhaps that is where He is calling you to serve?”
Their children continue to serve in Nicaragua when they visit. This group now includes a new daughter, as their eldest son, Andrew married Amberly in a postponed wedding in 2020 as a result of Kurt, Teresa and Sarah’s inability to return home due to COVID.
Realizing there are many physical needs that can be addressed in Nicaragua as a result of the poverty found there, Kurt and Teresa see meeting these needs as a door to their real heart’s desire, which is sharing the peace that comes from a knowledge of the gospel and a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Their mission verse, Romans 5:1, “Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ”. This peace, and the reason for it, is what they hope to share with those whom they work with and serve in Nicaragua, side by side with other Nicaragua brothers and sisters in Christ who share the same hope.
